Mountain adventures in the wild Balkans
For several years now, we’ve been offering special tours for those who enjoy being active and want to experience flying in a variety of ways. During our adventure weeks, we combine the joys of nature with adventure – from a morning summit climb followed by a glide into the valley to a relaxing crosscountry flight to a lake or a nice bar. Hike & Fly at its finest – authentic, varied, and unforgettable.
A pristine, remote and wild region for this format is the border triangle of Montenegro, northern Albania, and Kosovo. Winding roads meander through surprisingly high mountains and dense natural forests. Hiking trails marked on maps don’t always mean a path. Therefore, we explored the area extensively for you, sometimes getting stuck in the forest, sometimes having to surrender to rocks and searching for new access points to possible launch sites. In the end, we compiled a diverse range of flight options, accessible on foot and in some sections by car. We’re guaranteed to be on mountains that have little or no hiking or flying experienced before.
Until twenty years ago, the Dinaric Alps in the border region of Montenegro, Albania, and Kosovo were virtually inaccessible. Only the Prokletije National Park, established in 2009, and the Peaks of the Balkans project reopened old shepherd and trade routes across the border. On this long-distance trail, along rugged rock formations, mountain lakes and waterfalls, through secluded valleys and remote mountain villages, time seems to have stood still. We seek gentle takeoffs on the edge of this limestone mountain range to marvel at the wild natural beauty from the air. In the foothills of the Alps around the lake near Plav, various hills and mountain peaks offer beautiful excursions.
In northern Montenegro, there is a second of five national parks. The Durmitor region lies on a high plateau, approximately 1,500 meters above sea level, bordered by deep gorges. Canyoning is a popular activity on the rivers, and we gaze at the diverse flora and fauna, as well as up at the Savin Kuk mountain range (cover photo of the trip). In the ski area, we can either take the rustic chairlift to the launch site or follow the hiking trails to one of the numerous neighboring peaks.
As usual, we’ll plan the tour as flexibly as possible, depending on the weather. You should be fit enough to hike up to 2.5 hours a day, climbing approximately 800 meters in elevation with your gear. We assume you have safe takeoff and landing techniques. We look forward to welcoming a curious, adventurous group and an active week in the wild beauty of the Balkans.
